Why Have Your Golf Clubs Fitted?

A recent issue of Golf Digest proclaims the passing of an era: “The days of buying standard clubs off the rack are just about gone.” (Golf Digest February 2007).

The article goes on to state:

“Not only are there more options today, but it’s easier and more cost-effective than ever to get clubs suited to your body, fitness level and swing.  And it doesn’t matter if you are a weekend player or a tour professional.”

We are gratified to see the national golf media coming around to the realization that fitted clubs work best.  We are in our 15th year of fitting golf clubs and we have been making believers out of our players, one customer at a time.

A GolfWeek.com columnist, James Achenbach, just confirmed our own mantra with the following observation about the need for outdoor ball flight in the fitting process:

“This is the one and only cardinal rule of clubfitting: Never buy a set of clubs without hitting balls outside, in conditions that allow you to see the direction and trajectory. Indoor nets, coupled with launch monitors and other swing analyzers, are useful. However, golf is not played in a laboratory. To gain a realistic sense of club performance, you need to take the measuring devices outside.”

We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.  Clubfitting is an art and a science.  To be sure, fitting golf clubs has been compared to 1) adjusting the seat, mirrors, and steering wheel before taking a drive; 2) tailoring a suit; or 3) finding the right shoe size, width and contour.   Fitting a set of golf clubs is much more complex than such metaphors can convey.

The human dynamics of the golf swing, the goals of the player, the experience of the fitter, and the tools and demo clubs available, all come into play in the search for the best fit.  Every golf swing is individual and can be likened to a fingerprint.   Just think about the difference in swings among your friends and you will note that each player follows his or her unique path to and through impact.  Each player imparts varying degrees of force on the club shaft at various points in the swing.  Some players are quick-paced and short, while others are slow, deliberate, full-turn swingers.  Some have physical restrictions while we’ve all seen the fluidity of our sons’ and daughters’ youthful swings.

Combine the human dynamics with the continuing explosion in golf club and shaft design and materials in the last five years.  The result is some fascinating options for putting the correct and best fit together with the guidance of an experienced clubfitter.

That is where we come in.

We apply our knowledge and experience to help you enjoy the game more, play better,  and hit farther with a more accurate shot dispersion.  We advise, you make your best decisions.  All the while, we keep in mind (and in our sight) the one most reliable clubfitting measuring device: your full ball flight.

Again, GolfWeek.com says it best, emphasizing outdoor clubfitting:

“Let me repeat: There is something that bothers me a great deal about indoor testing. It is the intimidation factor. Many golfers appear to be self-conscious and intimidated by the indoor experience. Take these players outside, however, and often they swing more naturally.

This is a big reason why demo days are so valuable. The outdoor experience also has given rise to the traveling fitting van... These vans...(allow)...golfers to hit clubs with different specifications and be thoroughly evaluated...

A great fitter is worth more than a great fitting system. Someone who is genuinely interested in your game most likely will be able to help you.  In the end, it comes down to the individual fitter and his ability to listen, observe and appraise.

Finding the right set of clubs is not easy, and no one should pretend it is.”

We are genuinely interested in your game and we want to be that “great fitter” for you.  And we have great fitting systems from Ping, Callaway and TaylorMade in addition to our own proprietary systems and processes.

Call us or send us an email and we’ll get the discussion started about what a professional clubfitting can do for your game.

Better yet, come on in and hit some balls and find the ball flight you most desire!
